Problems caused

Bird droppings promote the growth of the fungus Histoplasma capsulatum. When inhaled, the spores can result in Histoplasmosis, a severe respiratory disease. Birds are also associated with over 60 human pathogenic diseases including salmonellosis, chlamydiosis, and avian influenza. Birds can also damage building materials since their droppings contain very high concentrations of corrosive ammonium urate and struvite. Over time, birds cause serious economic damage when building repairs and replacing destroyed equipment starts to add up not to mention the damage birds can do to a brand’s reputation.

Local Bird Species

Sparrows

House sparrows can cause considerable damage to crops, such as wheat and sorghum. They can contaminate animal feed products at food processing facilities, and their droppings are associated with more than 29 diseases as well as ectoparasites like bird mites.

Starlings

Starlings damage apples, blueberries, cherries, figs, grapes, peaches, and strawberries. Besides causing direct losses from eating the fruit, starlings peck and slash at fruits, reducing product quality and increasing the fruits’ susceptibility to diseases and rot.
