Eastern subterranean termites are the termite species common to our area. Their colonies are made up of three castes – workers, soldiers, and the king and queen. The workers are cream colored and are the ones chewing through your wood. The soldiers are about ¼ inch long and are there to protect the colony from intruders. Queens and kings are black or dark brown, about 3/8 to a half inch long. You may also see swarmers in spring and summer – they are the ones with wings that are creating a new colony.
