Closing the Route Book: Celebrating Mark Hilling’s 43-Year Career

On June 7, 1983, Mark Hilling began his career with ACE Exterminating, now an OPC Pest Services company. Armed with a route book and a pocket full of quarters to check in from pay phones, he set out to serve his community the only way he knew how: reliably and with pride. Forty-three years later (or 15,241 days whichever way you want to count it), Mark is officially closing that route book for the final time and stepping into a well-earned retirement.

From those “quarter warrior” days to now using cell phones and text messages, Mark saw the industry transform. What never changed, however, were the relationships he built. He has serviced the children and grandchildren’s homes of some of his original customers – showing his dedication of steady protection, trust, and his heroic impact in action.

Reflecting on what kept him committed for more than 40 years, Mark shared, “It was always an everchanging career. The industry provided new products and new methods with better equipment, and I was always meeting new and interesting people. This career also gave me the flexibility to keep up with my family life, which I always appreciated.”

He also noted, “I was fortunate to serve multiple generations of the same family. I enjoyed watching families grow and go through life changes like getting new jobs, having children, etc.” Building relationships that last generations doesn’t happen by accident – it happens when you treat customers like neighbors and show up with care year after year.

Even as technology advanced, Mark maintained one consistent tradition: reviewing his monthly “route book” and “working the logistics to make sure I was able to service every customer.” That commitment to detail, ownership, and going above and beyond is what it means to be remarkable.

In a full circle moment and succession plan, Mark mentored David Parmley (someone he once coached in little league) to take over his route, working together to ensure the customers receive the same dependable and trusted care. “It was a nice surprise when he arrived at OPC, and I knew I had someone I could trust to take care of my longtime customers,” Mark said.

For 43 years, Mark showed up with purpose, protected homes with pride, and built relationships that will last long after his final service call. His career stands as a reflection of what it means to lead with action, serve with heart, and leave a lasting impact.

OPC Pest Services congratulates Mark on an extraordinary career and thanks him for embodying the very best of why we show up – for our customers, our teammates, and our communities.
